A Message from the CEO

During my clinical training, I became increasingly aware of a significant gap in practical point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) education. Ultrasound has the potential to transform bedside assessment and clinical decision-making, yet access to structured, high-quality training was not always readily available.

This gap became the starting point for my passion for point-of-care ultrasound and ultimately for the development of POCUS Wales.

Early in my training, I pursued formal accreditation in Focused Ultrasound of the lung, abdomen and deep veins (DVT), alongside achieving BSE Level 1 accreditation in echocardiography. I was also privileged to become the first supervisor of ultrasound-assisted lumbar puncture in Wales. These experiences reinforced my belief that ultrasound should not be viewed simply as a specialist skill, but as an essential extension of the clinical examination for healthcare professionals working at the bedside.

My commitment to education has always been closely linked to my clinical practice. I was honoured to receive the John Munro Medal for Excellence in Teaching from the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, recognising my contribution to medical education.

POCUS Wales was established with a simple but ambitious vision: to make high-quality, practical point-of-care ultrasound education accessible to clinicians across Wales and beyond. Our aim is not simply to teach people how to operate an ultrasound machine, but to develop clinicians who can integrate ultrasound confidently, safely and appropriately into everyday clinical practice.

Through our courses, conferences and educational initiatives, we hope to build a community of clinicians who share a passion for bedside ultrasound, support one another’s learning, and continue to advance the use of POCUS in modern healthcare.

I firmly believe that the future of point-of-care ultrasound lies in education that is practical, evidence-based and accessible. POCUS Wales is committed to being part of that future.

Making POCUS Education Practical & Accessible

We believe effective POCUS education follows a continuous journey.
